Mudrika and I tend to spend New Years' eve the following way which has become a bit of a tradition. We go out for a special lunch or dinner and then settle down to write down our goals for the year. This year was no exception - even though we were in the Carribean visiting friends in Turks and Caicos over Christmas - with personal development friends Eric Edmeades, Bruce Muzik and Chris Hughes plus a host of international friends - we caught an early flight home to ensure we still wrote down our goals on New Year's Eve.
I am advocating keeping our goals simple this year - rather than have 20 seperate goals, I wanted to have maximum 2 goals per life segment ... the ones I REALLY had to achieve. So for example, in my personal relationship category, I have just 2 entries: I want to ensure that I support Mudrika by being the best father I can be when our little girl is born 1st May; also keep our date nights sacred and do something special which will be even more important once the baby is born.
Another example: my health & fitness category this year is focused on raising my energy levels. So for example, I am committed to keeping energy levels up in the office with short burst of rebounding BEFORE I get too tired to be able to do anything about it. Also I have segmented the working day into morning, afternoon and early evening sections - and seeing which is the best segment for me to exercise - I have a feeling it might be early afternoon just before 3pm when I have an energy low.
You might find the following of interest. Whilst on holiday we met a lovely couple, Scott and Dallyce. Dallyce told us that doctors had given her a 10% chance of survival many years ago as her body kept shutting down - she was heavily asthmatic and the only thing keeping her alive were the drugs which were in turn killing her also. To keep a long story short, here mother refused this diagnosis and discovered that Dallyce had 52 allergies she has built up over time to various foods as her body became more and more toxic - but it had all started with just one or two allergies. She started eliminating the foods and now Dallyce leads a healthy life and has re-introduced almost all foods back into her diet - although dairy products are a big no-no. This has spurned me into writing down when I feel most full of energy or empty, at what time of the day and recording what I have eaten, as some foods can give you massive energy and others can deplete you.
Another example: my Personal Effectiveness category has me seeking out personal effectiveness guru Chris Hughes, spending the weekend with him and his partner Ellie to find out how I can be more effective on a daily basis. One distinction he taught me while out in the Carribean was to focus on the £10,000 projects rather than the £10 projects.
Finally Bruce Muzik shared with me that he only looks at emails after 12pm so he can concentrate on his bigger, more important projects in the morning, and I loved this idea so this is something I will be doing in 2009.
We tend to use the mindmap technology for this, which allows us to use pictures, colours and shapes but any other way will do too.
We get them photocopied and laminated and hang them around the house, notably anywhere we spend some time - in front of the bathroom mirror when we brush our teeth, in the shower - this is the best place for them, but please don't forget to laminate them first!!
Wishing you a very Happy and of course, Prosperous New Year.
Marcus
