Donald Trumpisms at the Wealth Workout!
At the Wealth Workout monthly meeting, we watched a video of Donald Trump, the Donald as he calls himself, the infamous American real estate billioniare and the original star of the Apprentice, giving his outlook on life and business. Remember he is worth over $9 Billion, and so it was both food for thought as well as lots of food for discussion.
Here are the the best of the best Donald Trumpisms:
1. Always deal with the boss: by this Donald means always deal with the decision maker, whether in business or in real life. Don't waste valuable time negotiating with people who cannot make the decisions
2. A deal is a deal: when you agree to something, make sure you stick to it. The point here is that while good news spreads fast, bad news spreads wider and faster and so a reputation can be tarnished quickly. Also, make sure that you strike reasonable deals with yourself, so that you can live up to your promises. While we must always strive to do better, there is one phrase by Anthony Robbins which really stands out for me "People always overestimate what they can do in the short-term, and they always underestimate what they can do in the long term".
3. Always stand up for yourself. You know, if you don't stand up for yourself, then who else will. So stand up, be a leader and speak out and defend the things you stand for.
This also means being prepared to 'blow your own trumpet' now and again. The phrase "my work speaks for itself" is not going to get you very far - make sure that people know what you are doing.
4. God is in the details. You can have a superb brochure, but if there are a few spelling mistakes in it, all credibility is lost. Donald gives the example of someone trying to sell a car but is too lazy to spend $10 on washing it first in order to make an extra $200 on selling it. "That guy", says the Donald, "is a loser!"
5. You've got to believe in what you are selling. Here you can exchange the words 'selling' with 'doing', 'promoting'. If you don't believe in it you will not be successful. In other words, don't do it for the money, do it because you love doing it and the money is sure to follow.
6. Think outside of the box. As much as this seems like a cliche, if you CAN do something different to the others, you might well get all the rewards. How else can you differentiate yourself and your services. Think of Richard Branson, and how he likes to promote himself and his brand always in a very different and unique way - usually involving him getting dressed up or speeding across continents. You may think it doesn't have much to do with business but these billionaires disagree!
7. Always think big. For Donald, it was always easier to think bigger because no-one cares about the small deals. Let's face it, would you rather have 1% of a £10,000 deal or 1% of a £10 million deal? Our grads felt that the word, 'big' was intimidating, so we renamed it 'exciting'. How much more exciting can you make YOUR goals and dreams? If you are aiming at increasing sales by 30% next year you will think in a certain way and take a certain action. But if you were thinking of increasing sales by 300%, can you see that you are going to have to think in a totally different way and take totally different action. And guess what, you might only achieve 100% increase in sales ... are you complaining?
8. Be passionate. You cannot be successful without passion. This is partly linked with believing what you are promoting but it is more. It is the capability to be passionate even when sometimes you don't feel like it. Passion is contagious ... and people want more of it. Be passionate and you will be a winner.
9. Surround yourself with smart people who also happen to be loyal. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you, more capable, faster, able to do the things you can't ... BUT ... they must be loyal. And if someone proves they are unloyal, then you must act quickly because they have shown their true colours and are likely to do it again. Almost everyone of our grads admitted that they were still spending far too much time with people who were not the best and were emotionally hanging on to that they should replace ... what about you?!
I hope you enjoyed them. Or you can go one further and take action on them. Imagine taking one action now on each of these points? Imagine you are Donald Trump or Richard Branson - what would they do. Take action now, even if it is just one it is 100% times better than none at all. Go for it.
